Last year Sheffield Theatres mounted an ambitious season of Michael Frayn plays - Benefactors, Copenhagen, and Democracy - three plays linked by their theatrical style that mixes narration with action. They are also three rather wonderful plays. I was asked to write a short essay for the season programme. I was rather pleased with what I came up with and, if I may be forgiven for boasting, Michael Frayn liked it too. Since the season is long over, I think I it would be okay to post it up right here.
